Mas Donis Rosato 2006
Cellar Capçanes
Rose
80% Grenacha 20% Syrah (on bottle), but the website claims 80% Grenache 10% Merlot, and 10% Syrah.
Pop and Pour: The color is the immediate stand out for this wine. Brilliantly dark and captivating, almost crimson. Cranberry comes through on the nose. Very light on its feet in the mouth. Crisp and easy on the palate, almost like drinking kool-aid. It is good, but light. It is there, but it just doesn't do much one way or another. That's the problem with this wine, it is just there.
Fast Forward: A little more character comes with just a little time (30 minutes), mostly of a cherry liquor. Really nothing to go crazy over. There is a little tannin on the finish, and the depth really never shows it face. I am not asking for much on a Rose, but this is a little too simplistic. The nose opens a little more and reveals a little copper (penny), but still definitely mixed with cranberries.
Overall: Okay, I get it. Rose does not have to be an awe-inspiring event. However, there is a lot of Rose out there that will at the very minimum play along with you palate. This wine just kind of plays nothing. I love Rose, just not this style. Now every wine has its place. Patio Pounders have a fit, and this may be the Genre for this wine. So if you are every outside and it's 95+ degrees and you refuse to drink white wine, then this wine is for you, especially since the color is sooo dark. If you are like me, this wine is just an Average Rose in a world of blooming possibilities. AVERAGE
